We are, mostly, starting to get over the colds we all had here at the farm. Except for my mother, who now has a light cold. That said, my father put it best when he commented this morning that we’ve lost three weeks to being sick. Which is so very true. So this week I am going to try, without relapsing into a new head cold, to catch up. And that means ALL THE NEWS for the blog. Not that it will be all that exciting, but I’m still trying to share the blog post about pigs the power outages keep eating. I really am a bit behind.

First up, despite feeling poor last week, the Cornish cross meat birds were dispatched off to the freezer.

Aged 8 weeks old, with an average finish weight around 7.5 lbs each (the range was from 6.5 lbs to nearly 9lbs). A very successful batch of meat chickens this time. Should all future groups be the same!

Their habitat is now empty and resting. We will toss the bedding for it to start composting. If the plan holds, the next batch of meat chicks will be in January.

Next to catch y’all up are on the pigs, piglets, and new pig farrowing pens. Let’s hope there’s no power outages tomorrow or I really will think the universe doesn’t like to talk about pigs.

Poniéndose al día

Estamos, en general, recuperando de la gripe que tuvimos todos. Menos mi madre, que ahora tiene la gripe de nuevo. Mi padre comentó esta mañana que perdimos tres semanas la gripe. Y es la verdad. Entonces, esta semana voy a probar a ponerse al día. Significa que van a recibir todos las noticias. No será tan interesante, pero todavía estoy probando contarse una noticia de los cerdos y los cortes de luz siguen a borrar. Veramente me queda atrasado con las noticias.

Primero, a pesar de estar enfermo la semana pasada, carneamos los pollos de carne.

A edad de 8 semanas, con un peso promedio de 3.5 kilos (pesan de 3 kilos hasta 4 kilos). Un grupo de pollos muy bien criado esta vez. Ojalá que cada grupo en el futuro será lo mismo.

El pollero está vacío y va a quedar vacío. Doblamos la viruta para iniciar el proceso de compost, pero más de esto, dejamos como está. Si el plan sigue, en enero vamos a comprar un lote segundo.

La próxima noticia será de los cerdos, los lechones, y los porteros de cría nuevos. Espero que no esteran cortés de luz mañana o voy a pensar que algo no le gustan cerdos.
