All of our chicks are now a bit over 5 weeks old! In general, everyone is very healthy and thriving. We lost another meat chick, up to a total loss of 6 Cornish cross chicks. There was no indication there was a problem with the chick. And then Alejandro discovered a small coral snake which had decide the electric blanket in with the meat chicks was home. Both snake and man were unpleasantly surprised that morning. The coral snake is no more and we haven’t lost any more chicks since. The black chicks, the commercial layers, are still thriving and we still have 84 of those, much to our great surprise.

I don’t know how much change you can see in pictures from one week to another now. The Cornish crosses just look big. The black layers just look small. Both breeds have nearly all their feathers, including head feathers. We raised up the lights the last step over the weekend and removed the electric blankets. We will be having the lights on only at night this week. By Friday the chicks won’t need supplemental heat at all.

The black chicks are very hard to photograph. They are constantly in motion. The white ones are only energetic if there’s incoming food. Food consumption is, as always, startlingly high for the meat birds. They are now consuming nearly 20 kilos (44lbs) of food a day.

Noticias del Pollitos

Todos los pollitos tienen un poco más de cinco semanas. En general, todos están en muy bien salud. Perdimos una otra doble pechuga por un total de seis muertos. No fue ninguna indicación de mal salud, pero un día después Alejandro encontró una víbora chica abajo de la cama caliente de la caja de cuida de las dobles pechugas. Los dos, víbora y hombre, fueron mal sorprendidos. La víbora no vive más y no perdimos más pollitos. Los negritos, las ponedoras comerciales, están en muy bien salud y todavía están las 84.

No sé si puede ver mucho cambio en las fotos entre esta semana y la semana pasada. Las dobles pechugas se parece muy grande. Las pollitas negras se parecen chicas. Las dos razas están casi todo plumados, incluye las plumas a la cabeza. Levantamos las lamparillas a la última etapa este fin de semana y sacamos las camas calientes. Prendemos las lámparas solamente por la noche esta semana. Al fin de la semana los pollitos no van a necesitar las cajas de cuida.

Las pollitas negras son muy difíciles a sacar fotos. Están siempre corriendo y se asusta muy fácilmente. Los blancos solamente mueve si agrega más comida. El volumen de comida que están comiendo las dobles pechugas es imponente. En este momento es casi 20 kilos por día.
