Guest house update

I keep thinking that one of these days I’ll get to make a post that says we’ve finished and it’s available to rent.

Today is not that post.

However, progress has been made. We now have a bathroom mirror (and, wow, what a difference that makes!), baskets and hangers in the closet, and an almost finished patio fence. Patio furniture is being scrubbed and waxed, the floor is being cleaned, and we have the fire-pit seats cut. The fence to keep the sheep and guests on their respective sides is in progress. We are close. So very close.

As we inch closer, now is when I ask for a bit of help from y’all. When you travel, what do you expect to find in a rental cottage? Are there things you automatically think will be there? Are there things that you always hope to find? It have been more than a decade since either my parents or I traveled and stayed anywhere. Please let us know your favorite (or least favorite) amenities when you travel.

Extra blankets is case it gets cold. A fan if it is hot. A kettle for tea or coffee. Will they cook their own meals? Or eat with you?

Tea kettle, coffe pot, coffee filters, tea, sugar, and ground coffee I remembered. Extra blankets I did not!! Thank you, shall go find some and add to the closet. The guest house has Air Conditioning 😉
There’s a kitchen, with the stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, and, I dearly hope, all the dishes and cookware needed.

We rent frequently (USA & Italy) and are usually doing outdoor activities, so I appreciate when there are beach towels (if you’re near-ish any swimming opportunities), a way to clean muddy boot and gear like some old small towels, or brush, etc., a basin/tub/bucket to wash a few clothes and/or carry them wet to a clothesline or rack to hang them to dry – bonus points for a little thing of laundry soap. (I don’t like to think that someone might have washed their socks in the pasta pot!) Depending on how far the location is from a shop, and if you’re getting people who might be flying in, then driving, and possibly arriving late and tired, it’s really nice to have a few snacks or supplies for one basic meal like pasta or rice, etc. – we tend to see this in Italian rentals, but not necessarily in the states. And for a farm stay, I’d love the option to add on what’s in season – like pay an extra amount for a thing of fresh veg per day or something like that. My least favorite thing about rentals (other than them not being clean or the hosts keeping coming by too much) is when heavily scented laundry & cleaning products are used. The kitchen supplies in rentals in the states are so all over the map, that I have a bag with the essentials I bring since we’re driving and have the space. And congrats on getting your place up and running soon – it looks like a great place to stay!

Thank you for your such a detailed & thoughtful response. I truly appreciate it! Our guest house is truly a guest house – we live here full time on the farm, so the good news is we are on hand with such things as laundry facilities, outdoor bootwash supplies, and things of that ilk. Had not thought about beach towels as we are about 30 min from the ocean, and shall add it to the list of things to add to the closet. Your point about having some basic dry goods or snack offering available is one we had not considered. We are indeed 40 min from the nearest market, so I shall make note and fill some containers. We can absolutely offer a box of whatever is in season!
I’m pleased to say we already use as low-scent detergents as we can, so that one is taken care of. Thank you again.
