Summer farm chores include cutting new firewood. So we make sure to take advantage of the afternoon shade in our small woodlot to clean up deadfall and cut down a few trees for firewood. We’re lucky that with our mild and relatively short winters we don’t use nearly as much firewood as those of you in cold climates who heat with wood. We have a few trees every year that the winter storms uproot or damage. If we can cut them down correctly they will regrow from the same root system. The woodlot we have now had all been cut down at least once before we bought the property and we’ve been harvesting trees for all the years we’ve been here. A little care goes a long way and helps make sure we’ll have firewood for years.

Es tiempo para cortar leña

Unos de los mandados del verano es cortar leña nueva. Entonces, aprovechamos la sombra del bosque para limpiar ramas y sacar algunos árboles dañados. Estamos muy afortunados con el clima acá y no usamos tanta leña por la estufa como en el norte de los EE. UU. o países más fríos. Las tormentas del invierno dañan algunos árboles cada año. Si cortamos los árboles correctos, un árbol nuevo crecen de las raíces mismas. El boque que tenemos fue cortado entero al mínimo una vez antes que compramos el campo y nosotros cosechamos árboles todos los años. Un poco de cuidado asegura que tendremos leña por años más.
