After the tree falling on the roof of the guest house we’ve been a lot more concerned about some of the eucalyptus trees. My father and I love trees and, and while this particular eucalyptus grove is managed for firewood, we’ve always been reluctant to cut too many at one time. If harvested correctly, they will re-grow and letting them get too old means they might die instead. Still, cutting trees is painful. But then, so is having trees fall on buildings.

The last storm that rolled through had particularly high winds. The worst of it missed us, but further into Uruguay there was substantial damage to homes, businesses, and surrounding woodlands. We decided a little bit of prevention might not be amiss.

I’m not sure you can tell from the pictures but we felled about fifteen trees. A couple were listing badly after the last storm, others we decided might be a danger. To fell them we waited for a day with strong winds coming from the right direction to give us a chance to miss the buildings. We missed the wood crib by inches. But a miss is a miss.

Now that they’re down we have to cut and split them for firewood. I might be staring at trees for a while as this wasn’t in the fall plan. At least they can’t fall twice!

Un poco de prevención

Después de la caída del árbol en el techo de la casa de huéspedes, hemos estado mucho más preocupados por algunos de los eucaliptos. A mi padre y a mí nos encantan los árboles y, aunque este eucalipto en particular se maneja para leña, siempre hemos sido reacios a cortar demasiados a la vez. Si se cosechan correctamente, volverán a crecer y dejar que envejezcan demasiado significa que podrían morir. Aun así, cortar árboles es doloroso. Pero también lo es que los árboles caigan sobre los edificios.

La última tormenta que pasó por allí tuvo vientos particularmente fuertes. Lo peor no nos alcanzó, pero más adentro de Uruguay hubo daños sustanciales en casas, negocios y bosques circundantes. Decidimos que un poco de prevención podría no estar mal.

No estoy segura de que se pueda decir en las fotos, pero talamos unos quince árboles. Un par de ellos estaban mal listados después de la última tormenta, otros decidimos que podrían ser un peligro. Para derribarlos esperamos un día con fuertes vientos que venían de la dirección correcta para darnos la oportunidad de perdernos los edificios. Salvamos la cuna de madera por centímetros. Pero salvamos.

Ahora que están abajo, tenemos que cortarlos y partirlos para leña. Podría estar mirando los árboles por un tiempo, ya que esto no estaba en el plan de otoño. ¡Al menos no pueden caerse dos veces!
