One of the first things we did after buying the farm is have a well drilled. Water is important. We’ve had water shortages over the years – either by drought or from well problems – and we try very hard not to have it happen again. Water is pumped out of our well into two tanks which are part of a water tower that sits in between my parent’s house and a galpon. Our clothes lines are built around it.

Way back when we first built the water tower in 2012 it looked like this:

A very, very tall tower. A water tank at the very top drained into a larger holding tank at the bottom on a cement platform. After living on farm for a bit we learned the tower was too tall. It would sway in storms. Which was very scary.

In 2015 we added a platform in the middle of the tower:

The tanks were re-plumbed so that the water went in to the middle tank and drained into the bottom tank, leaving the top tank empty. It helped the tower to not be quite so top heavy. It still swayed in stormy weather. Sometime after 2020 we cut off the top of the tower just above the cross-braces of the second tank. I somehow missed getting pictures of that. But here’s what it has looked like for the past several years:

The platform for the second tank has been slowly rotting away. We braced the floor support. We slid cement board under the upper tank to help reinforce the floor. We added a metal walkway in front of the tank in case we had to go up a level to check the tank. We have been babying the platform for years until we could get it changed out.

This year the project finally made it to the top of the list. My father built a new platform under the existing platform using square beams.

With the new platform in place, my father, Ruben, and Alejandro emptied the upper tank, disconnected all the water pipes, hoisted the tank up, removed the rotted platform, and set the tank on its new base. The tank plumbing then had to be re-installed. I was a bad blogger and missed taking pictures of the whole process. Sorry. But look, the now stable and functional tank on it’s new base:

We will eventually put a new roof on the tower. But right now we are celebrating the completion of a project that has been pending for a very, very long time.

La reparación de la torre de agua.

Una de las primeras cosas que hicimos después de la compra del padrón fue el pozo de agua. El agua es muy importante. Sobre los años, faltamos agua por sequía o dificultades con el pozo de agua. Hacemos mucho trabajo para asegurarnos de que no falta agua. Con el sistema nuestro, el agua está bombeada del pozo a un tanque que está puesto a una torre entre la casa de mis padres y un galpón. Los tendederos están alrededor de la torre de agua.

Cuando recién construimos la torre de agua en 2012, se parecía como esto:

Una torre muy alta. Un tanque en la parte superior drenado a un tanque puesto al piso con una base de hormigón. Después de un poco de tiempo en el campo, aprendimos que la torre era demasiado alta. Se balancea en las tormentas o con viento fuerte. Fue muy aterradora.

En 2015 agregamos una plataforma en el medio de la torre:

Los canos de los tanques fueron reinstalados y el agua entró en el tanque en el medio y después drenado al tanque en el piso, dejando el tanque superior vacío. Ayudo a eliminar peso al punto de la torre. Todavía, la torre balancea durante las tormentas o con viento fuerte. En 2020 cortamos el nivel más alto de la torre un poco sobre el tanque segundo. Me faltan fotos de ese trabajo. Pero, por los últimos años, la torre de agua estaba como esto:

La plataforma del tanque segundo se ha estado pudriendo poco a poco. Reforzamos la plataforma. Metemos la placa de cimenticia abajo del tanque. Agregamos un perfil de hierro para darnos un lugar a estar si tuvimos que chequear el tanque. Cuidamos muy bien la plataforma por años hasta tuvimos tiempo a cambiarlo.

Finalmente, este año el proyecto de la torre de agua subió al número uno en la lista. Mi padre construyó una plataforma nueva abajo de la plataforma vieja con vigas cuadradas.

Con la nueva plataforma puesta, mi padre, Ruben, y Alejandro vaciaron el tanque superior, desconectaron todos los canos, levantaron el tanque, sacaron la plataforma podrida, y bajaron el tanque a la plataforma nueva. Y conectaron de nuevo todos los canos. Y lo hice mal y no saqué ninguna foto. Lo siento. Pero, mira, el tanque superior es estable y funciona:

Eventualmente, queremos poner un techo a la torre sobre el tanque superior. ¡Pero por ahora celebramos que, después de muchos años, el trabajo de la torre es completo!
