Continuing the update routine, I present a finished kitchen wall in the guest house! We are ridiculously pleased with the outcome.

We did get those last few trim pieces on the right installed. I just didn’t go back and take another picture. A stove has been purchased, but won’t be unboxed until install. We also got the fascia boards up! Such a small thing to make such a big change to the look of the house:

With luck, by the end of this coming week we’ll have the rain gutters all installed and I’ll have painted the last of the baseboards. As always, progress depends on the weather. In construction OR farming.

Progreso de la construcción

¡Seguimos con el tema de noticias de novedades, te presento la terminación de la pared en la cocina! Estamos muy orgullosos de esta pared. Es muy linda.

Sí, instalamos las últimas piezas allí a la derecha. Solamente que no me fui a sacar una foto nueva. Ya compramos una cocina, pero está en una caja todavía. Y va a quedar en la caja hasta la instalación. ¡También están terminados las tablas de fascia! Es una cosa muy pequeña, pero se parece un gran cambio en la casita:

Con suerte, antes del fin de la semana terminamos la instalación de los desagües y voy a tener pintado los zócalos. Como siempre, con la agricultura o la construcción, todo depende al clima.

Rural power & building progress

Hello again all! Rural life has its charms but also its quirks. August and September are storm season in our part of Uruguay and this past weekend brought the high winds and rainstorms. And power outages. From last Thursday through Tuesday of this week we’ve had intermittent, unreliable power. Power on for ten minutes, off for two hours. On for four hours, off every other ten minutes for the rest of the day. Which means we are running a bit behind here on the farm for anything that involves electricity. Like updating y’all here on the blog. Last week’s chick update is so late I’ll be sharing last week’s and this week’s together. Until the pictures of cute (& not so cute) chicks, please admire our in-progress wall of tile.

After much debate we settled on a wall of tile in the guesthouse for the kitchen. We’d considered just making it a plain plaster wall, paneling it in wood, partial paneling, tiny tile, partial tile backsplash, back to paneling, then maybe narrow paneling. It’s the last major step before the small stuff to finish the guest house. We finally decided large white tile, mirroring the layout in the bathroom. It’s smooth, the color scheme remains cohesive, it’s easy to clean, and will feel cool and fresh during our long, hot summer season. It took my father and I bit to get into the groove of laying wall tile again as it’s been a bit since we did the last part. But he cut the tiles, I put them up and we had all the tiles up in two days. A bit of drying time and we’ll get the grout in and the electrical finished. We have the powder coated metal edging on order and once that’s in we’ll be ready for counters. We can’t wait!

Luz rural & Construyendo progreso

¡Hola de nuevo! La vida rural es muy linda, pero también tiene su peculiaridad. Agosto y septiembre son los meses de tormentas en nuestra zona de Uruguay. Esta semana pasada tuvimos tormentas eléctricas con vientos fuertes. Y cortés de luz. Desde el jueves pasado hasta este martes no tuvimos luz consistente. Luz por diez minutos, sin luz por dos horas. Luz por cuatro horas, luz cortadas cada otro veinte minutos. Toda esa significa que estamos muy atrasados a las cosas por lo que usamos electricidad. Como las noticias del blog. La noticia de la semana pasada de los pollitos voy a juntar con la noticia de esta semana. Hasta las fotos de los pollitos cariños (y no tan cariños), por favor, admira nuestro muro media hecho con cerámica.

Después de mucha consideración, decidimos a instalar cerámica a la pared de la cocina en la casa de huéspedes. Pensamos de una pared de yeso, de tiras de madera, en meta de una pared de tiras de madera, en cerámica chica, en meta de una pared de cerámica chica, di nueva de madera, o en madera muy fina. Es la cosa más complicada a terminar por la casita. Después es todo cosas chicas. Finalmente, decidimos a esa cerámica media grande, hecho en el estilo mismo del baño. Es una cerámica lisa, el color es igual del baño, es fácil a limpiar, y se parece fresca durante los meses de calor. Paso un poco di tiempo por mi padre y yo a llegar a la cadencia de la instalación como paso mucho tiempo hasta hicimos el otro parte. Mi padre hizo los cortes y yo hice la instalación y terminamos todo después de dos días. Estamos esperando que seca la bindafix y después puedo aplicar la pastina. ¡La electricidad podemos terminar cuando está seca la pastina y más tarde, las mesadas!

Last week my father installed bathroom hardware and door jambs. We still have some big jobs to do but the small things are really making what progress we do make very tangible.

La semana pasada mi padre instaló los herrajes para el baño y los marcos de las puertas. Todavía tenemos algunas obras grandes para hacer, pero las cosas pequeñas que terminamos nos da el sentido que estamos progresando bien.

The end of last week and the beginning of this week were lost to automotive issues. Not due to accidents, thankfully, but rather electrical issues with both cars. We’ve spent a great deal of time driving in and out of town, in a rental, getting cars fixed. Actual time on farm has been in short supply. We are taking any progress on projects as a win.

I offer you a painted door, a shower water lip, and tile edgings.

Newly in progress is the floor molding.

Avances en la construcción

El fin de la semana pasada y el inicio de esta semana les perdieron debido a problemas automotores. Por gracias, no debido de accidentes. Las dos camionetas tuvieron algo mal con el eléctrico. Al mismo tiempo. Pasamos mucho tiempo, mi padre y yo, juntos, viajamos entre el campo y la ciudad, en un auto alquilado, para coordinar con el mecánico. Tiempo en campo, cuando pudimos trabajar, no tuvimos en gran cantidad. Cualquier avance es una cosa buena.

Les ofrece una puerta pintada, una parada de la ducha, y las terminaciones de la cerámica.

Recién empezado es la preparación de las molduras del piso principal.

Progress!! The bathroom vanity, sink, and faucet has been installed.

And, in further progress, I have painted the bathroom door jamb (you can see it if you look very carefully in the photo above), and the bathroom door is in progress.

I searched the blog this morning trying to find an old blog post to link for comparison and found that maybe we never shared the guest house? I can’t believe we didn’t share it. We’ve been trying to finish it since before we started building my house. Which was a very long time ago.

So, this is either totally new or you are going to sit there and shake you head and wonder how we could still be working on a tiny little guest house.

Current state:

The casita used to not have covered walkway with pillars, a tiled patio, an outside storage area, or such a large bathroom. It used to be surrounded by large eucalyptus trees that were just a bit too close to the house. No matter. We had nearly finished the casita. It had some issues, leaky windows being one, but hey, nearly done was nearly done, right?

No. My father decided he just wasn’t happy with the bathroom. It was functional but very very tiny. The windows were leaky, the front door didn’t hang right (7 years of wind and rain made it warp), underside of the deck was used as nesting areas for skunks, and the woodpeckers were slowly drilling holes in all the wood support posts for the roof overhang. So we remodeled the not yet finished casita. Which is why it’s still under construction.

Depending on the weather we are working on any number of parts. When the weather cooperates I’m painting the outside (it used to be red). We are working on inside trim and finishes, sealing the new bathroom vanity, and getting ready for kitchen installation. It’s all very slow and happens around the rest of the farm work. As is usual, it all got put on pause for the olive harvest. I have hope that by sharing the state of the guest house I will be encouraged to make progress just so I can show it off. Eventually we’ll be open for Farm Stay guests!

El progreso de la construcción

¿Busque en el blog esta mañana para hacer un link a una noticia vieja para tener una comparación y descubrí que puede ser nunca escribimos una noticia de la casita? No puedo creer que nunca te lo dije de la casita. Hemos estado tratando terminar la casita desde antes empezamos la construcción de la casa mía. Que fue hace mucho tiempo.

Entonces, esta noticia será totalmente nueva o vas a leer esta y me vas a preguntar como podemos estar construyendo una casita tan chica después de tanto tiempo.

El estado de la casita en este momento:

Las cosas nuevas de la casita son la entrada con techo y pilares, el patio con cerámica, el depósito, y el baño grande. Antes, eucaliptus crecieron muy cerca a la casa. No importa. Casi terminamos la casita. ¿Tuvo algunos problemas, como perdidas alrededor de las ventanas, pero casi terminado es casi terminado, sí?

No. Mi padre decidió que no le gustó el baño. La verdad funcionó, pero fue muy, muy chico el baño. Las ventanas tuvieron perdidas, la puerta principal fue dañado de la lluvia, los zorrillos usaban abajo del patio por sus nidos, y los pájaros carpinteros hicieron agujeros profundos en todos los postes exteriores. Entonces, cambiamos la casita. Es porque está, todavía, en proceso.

Los proyectos que hacemos depende al clima. Cuando está lindo, pinto el exterior (estaba un color frutilla). Si no es tan lindo, seguimos con los marcos y terminaciones a dentro de la casa, o preparo a sellar el stand de la bacha del baño. Es un proceso muy lento porque hacemos el trabajo alrededor del trabajo del campo. Y, como siempre, había una pausa durante la cosecha de las aceitunas. Tengo esperanza, si te cuento el estado de la casita me animaré avanzar un poco más rápido para mostrarte las cosas nuevas. ¡Eventualmente, seremos prontos para tener huéspedes a pasar tiempo acá como Farmstay!

We are moving forward (slowly) with construction on Megan’s house. So what’s up next?

insulation 1

Insulation, yucky to install, but oh so yucky to live without.

Most homes in Uruguay are brick (terra cotta brick, or hollow terra cotta brick), cement, stone, or sometimes, the fancy Styrofoam panel building stuff (which we know nothing about). Some are made using steel-frame, like we have done, but not a huge number. Why is this relevant? Because buildings made of stone, cement, or brick aren’t designed to have insulation in their walls here. Which means FINDING wall insulation is a lot of work. We had to order two different sizes of insulation to be able to appropriately fill the walls. So we’ll be handing twice as much insulations as we would normally need to. Itchy. Really itchy.

After the pink stuff? Sheetrock.  I know that just putting up sheetrock does not make a house ready to move into, but mentally it makes the possibility of getting finished so much closer. In theory, this is all the sheetrock we should need for the walls. We’ll see if we actually make it or if we run short.

And then? Mud and taping. But that’s a fair bit off. Don’t worry, I’ll share when we get there.

We have been busy building animal houses and green house and have had Megan’s house on hold.  Finally we are getting some work done.  The windows are in and now the ceiling has sheetrock and the doors are installed so moisture will not get in.  The outside is slowly getting the cement coating spread over the cement board.  We are inching our way along.

Electrical

We have had electricity at the house for almost a year now.  It has been very nice, we can’t even complain when a storm moves through and the electrical flickers or is off for a few hours.  At least we know it will be back.

Then we got electricity at the casita and in Galpon 1, which we treat as a workshop. But now, we have electrical available all over the farm! Here is Jon diligently working away to make it happen.

We now have light and an electrical outlet in both the rabbit house and the chicken house, we have outlets in Galpon 2 where Megan hopes to do her wool processing and an outlet in her house, so we can use power tools.  YEA! Progress!
