Three weeks in and we are doing fairly well with the chicks still. Which is great, as our last batch of last year was a disaster. More power outages have happened, both two weeks ago and this past week, but our loss rate is still low. We haven’t lost more of the black chicks, but did lose two more of the double breasted meat chicks. So a total of -1 commercial layer and -4 meat birds.

Because last week’s update didn’t happen, I bring you two weeks at once.

WEEK 2:

Commercial layer chicks, two weeks old:

The tail feathers of the layer chicks are starting to come in, as well as more defined wing feathers. But that’s if you look carefully. Otherwise they look pretty much like they did week 1. They are enjoying the slightly warmer weather – they are no longer staying under their heat lamps all the time. As you can see from the look in their brooder box. As they are into week 3 of age I raised the lights up a bit. Not a great deal and their heating mat is still on. Our nights are still chilly. No need to stress the chicks.

Meat chicks, two weeks old:

The meat chicks have more feathers as well. But sadly no longer even remotely cute. They do spend a great deal more time in their brooder box. I raised their lights as well but with their larger size they are closer to the lights still.

The black chicks are little active busybodies and spend most of their time running around. The meat chicks are lazy. Their idea of time well spent? Sunbathing.

They move over the course of the day to make sure they stay in the warm sunlight. Which is why we make sure the lights in the brooder boxes work even if it’s warm during the day. As night falls they look for the warm light and end up in the brooder boxes.

I forgot to ask for help in getting a picture of both chicks together, so here’s my attempt and getting one by myself:

From that angle they don’t look too different in size – but from the top you can see how much larger the meat chicks are:

There’s a reason why we buy meat chicks to raise for eating.

WEEK 3:

Commercial layer chicks:

They are now far, far too active to photograph well. They are very skittish of any motion. So it’s catch as catch can with pictures. They have a lot more feathers but still none on their heads and their tail feathers are still stubby. I find them still cute.

Meat chicks, week 3:

They are no longer even remotely cute. We changed feeders to the tower type and have two in there. They were laying in their feed dishes last week. They dirt bathe. They eat. They make a mess. And that’s about it. They don’t care if someone walks in unless food is added to the feeders. Or if they are out of water.

For both sets of chicks the brooders are still with lights and at the same level. We are having wildly swinging spring temperatures and it’s best to just make sure they can get warm if need be. Both spaces are large enough they can cool off if they want. The black chicks are actually more work at this stage – they like to scratch up everything so they bury their waterers and feeders. The white chicks are now lazy enough they don’t make effort to scratch the ground unless they want a dust bath. I’ll try for another comparison shot next week so y’all can see the now very different growth rates.

Noticias de los Pollitos

Tres semanas y todo va bastante bien con los pollitos. Es maravilloso, como el grupo último de pollitos del año pasado fue un desastre. Tuvimos más cortes de luz, la semana anterior y esta semana pasada. Pero no perdimos más pollitos negros. Perdimos dos más de las dobles pechugas. Entonces, es un total de -1 ponedoras comerciales y -4 doble pechuga.

Como no recibieron noticias de los pollitos la semana pasada, hoy les cuento dos semanas juntas.

SEMANA 2:

Pollitos ponedoras comerciales, dos semanas de edad:

Las plumas de las colas de los pollitos están llegando, también las plumas de las alas. Pero solamente si mira muy cuidadosamente. Si no, se parece que no hay mucho cambio de la semana pasada. Ellas les gusta mucho el tiempo más lindo – no quedan siempre en la caja de criadora. Como están casi tres semanas de edad yo levante las lámparas un poco. No mucho y todavía tengan la cama caliente. Las noches tiene temperaturas bajas y no es necesario estresar los pollitos.

Doble pechuga, dos semanas de edad:

Las dobles pechugas tienen más plumas también. Pero, lamentablemente, no son cariñosos más. Pasan mucho más tiempo en la caja de criadora abajo de las lámparas. Yo levanté las lámparas de ellos también, pero con un tamaño más grande que las negritas, todavía quedan más cerca a las lámparas.

Los pollitos negros son muy activos y pasan casi todo el día corriendo alrededor de su espacio. Las dobles pechugas son perezosas. Pasan todo el día sentado en el sol.

Mudan durante el día para estar siempre en el sol. Por eso mantenemos las lámparas en la caja de criadora, no importa la temperatura del día. Cuando llega la noche, ellos buscan la luz para calentarse y vuelvan a la caja de criadora. Si no, enfrían durante la noche y mueran.

Se me olvido pedir ayuda para sacar una foto de los dos pollitos juntos. Acá es lo que pude sacar sola:

Hay una razón por que se compra doble pechuga para carnear.

SEMANA 3:

Pollitas commerciales:

Ahora no se quedan quieta y es muy difícil a sacar fotos. Son muy tímidos. Tienen mucho más plumas ahora, pero faltan por la cabeza y la cola es como la semana pasada. Todavía, pienso yo que son un poco cariñosas.

Dobles pechugas:

No son cariñosos más. Cambiamos los comederos al estilo de torre y agregamos uno más. Estaban durmiendo en los comederos. Y ahora son de un tamaño suficiente que necesitan tener más espacio para acceder la comida. No son muy activos. Toman baños en el polvo. Comen. Hacen mugre. Y nada más. No les importa si alguien entra el espacio, si no es para dar comida o cambiar el agua.

Por los dos tipos de pollitos, las lámparas quedan al nivel mismo de la semana pasada. El clima en esta época es muy cambiante y puede bajar mucho a la noche. Es mejor dejarlos un modo a calentarse si es necesario. Los espacios grandes tienen oportunidades para pasar tiempo en aire más fresco si les interesa. Las pollitas negras son un poco más trabajo ahora – les gusta rascar el piso y cubrir los comederos y bebederos en viruta, tierra, y mugre. Las dobles pechugas no hacen nada si no es busca comida. La semana que viene trato de pedir ayuda y saco una foto de los dos juntos para mostrarles el tamaño entre los dos.
