The chicks have now been here for a week. Despite having a twelve hour power outage we’ve only lost two of the Cornish crosses and one commercial layer. Which is fabulous. We typically lose 10% of the chicks and so far are running well below average.

Cornish crosses:

They are no longer so cute. They are starting to visibly feather out, have doubled in size, and the once white cover of their electric mat is no longer visible. They are not energetic. At all. But they are active, so that’s good. They eat about twice as much as the commercial layer chicks. And, as you can see, like to do so by sitting IN their feed dish.

Commercial Layer chicks:

They are a bit bigger than before, but not by much. Still very much cute and fluffy. They are starting to feather out a little, but it’s hard to see as they are black. They are however VERY energetic. Zoom here. Zoom there. Steal from the chick next to them and RUN. Their heating mat isn’t white but no where near as bad as the other one.

Next week, if the weather settles, I will raise the lights up a bit which will lower the brooder temperature. If we keep it too warm they won’t go under it but it’s still far too cold at night to have them not seek the warmth of the brooder. The weather forecast is for a cold spring so I’m cautious about raising the lights too fast. I’ll be back next week with another photo update. If I can grab an extra pair of hands I’ll try and get a comparison of the chicks side by side and you can see the very real difference in size between then two.

¡Actualización de pollitas!

Los pollitos llegaron hasta una semana ahora. A pesar de una corte de luz de casi doce horas murieron solamente tres pollitos: dos dobles pechugas y una ponedora comercial. Esto es maravilloso. Normalmente, mueren al mínimo 10% y todavía murieron muy poco de lo normal.

Las dobles pechugas:

Ahora no son muy cariñosos. Desarrollan plumas, están doble el tamaño, y la cubierta blanca de la cama caliente no es blanca más. No son muy energéticos. Pero son activos, y esto es muy bueno. Comen doble la ración que las pollitas negras. Y, como puede ver, les gusta comer cuando están sentados ADENTRO del comedero.

Ponedoras comerciales (pollitas negras):

Están un poco más grandes que antes, pero no mucho. Están muy cariñosas todavía. Desarrollan algunas plumas. Es muy difícil a ver las plumas como están negras. Están con MUCHA energía. Mucha. Corren por acá. Corren por allá. Roban de la compañera y corren. La cama caliente no es blanca, pero no es tan horrible como la de las dobles pechugas.

La semana que viene, si el tiempo estabiliza, levantaré las luces un poco. Esa bajará la temperatura de la caja caliente. Si mantengo la temperatura demasiado alta, los pollitos no vuelvan a calentarse abajo de las luces. Todavía la temperatura baja mucho a noche y necesito que las pollitas buscan el calor de la caja caliente a no morir del frío en la noche. El pronóstico es por una primavera fría. Por esto, estoy muy nerviosa si bajo la temperatura demasiado rápido. Vuelvo la semana que viene con más fotos. Si puedo pedir ayuda, trato de tener una foto para mostrar la diferencia de tamaño entre las dos razas.
