One of the first things we did here on the farm was plant fruit trees. They take so long to establish we wanted to make sure we got them in early. Now, we’ve yet to stop planting fruit trees, but that’s a different problem. When we bought our first lemon trees I remember asking the nursery what varieties they had for sale. The answer was, the local kind, which bear all year. One option. One kind. But hey, they were supposed to provide year round fruit, so that was good, right?

As I shared earlier, this year we had an unusually large harvest of lemons. It took me longer than expected to harvest and process. I even made citrus vinegar because we had so many. Then the harvest tapered off like years past and I figured we were done until the end of June again.

HAH. Was I ever wrong. This year, the lemon trees have just kept producing. Now, not quite the volume of fruit that came in July, but still enough that we’ve used very little of the juice in the freezer.

The trees have just all kept producing. Most of the lemon trees look like this one. Immature fruit on towards the end of the branches, ripe fruit on the inside. For the first time ever, the trees are actually bearing fruit through the summer.

I’m starting to be a bit worried that this is actually what’s supposed to happen and that we planted too many lemon trees! Does anyone else have lemon trees that produce fruit all year? Is this just an odd year or should I make better plans for next year?

Limoneros que realmente dan frutos eternos

Una de las primeras cosas que hicimos aquí en la finca fue plantar árboles frutales. Tardan tanto en establecerse que queríamos asegurarnos de tenerlos temprano. Ahora, todavía no hemos dejado de plantar árboles frutales, pero ese es otro problema. Cuando compramos nuestros primeros limoneros, recuerdo que pregunté en el vivero qué variedades tenían a la venta. La respuesta fue, del tipo criollo, que da todo el año. Una opción. Un tipo. Pero bueno, se suponía que debían proporcionar fruta durante todo el año, así que eso era bueno, ¿verdad?

Como compartí anteriormente, este año tuvimos una cosecha inusualmente grande de limones. Me tomó más tiempo de lo esperado cosechar y procesar. Incluso hice vinagre de cítricos porque teníamos muchos. Luego, la cosecha disminuyó como años anteriores y pensé que habíamos terminado hasta finales de junio nuevamente.

HAH. No. Este año, los limoneros han seguido produciendo. Ahora, no es exactamente el volumen de fruta que vino en julio, pero aún así lo suficiente como para que hayamos usado muy poco jugo en el congelador.

Todos los árboles han seguido produciendo. La mayoría de los limoneros se parecen a este. Fruto inmaduro hacia el final de las ramas, fruto maduro en el interior. Por primera vez en la historia, los árboles están dando frutos durante el verano.

¡Estoy empezando a estar un poco preocupado de que esto es realmente lo que se supone que debe suceder y que plantamos demasiados limoneros! ¿Alguien más tiene limoneros que produzcan frutos todo el año? ¿Es solo un año extraño o debería hacer mejores planes para el próximo año?
