We resisted buying a tractor for years. They are expensive, require upkeep and maintenance, you need to know how to drive them (they are not quite like a car!), and you have to have a covered place to park them when not in use. For as many years as we could manage we contracted with a neighbor for the needed work. But hiring out the tractor work meant we were dependent on their schedule. And how quickly they managed the required repairs and maintenance. We acquired one small tractor, upgraded to a larger small tractor, and now have three tractors – one small, one large, and one that doesn’t work.

Overall, having a tractor makes managing farm work much easier. Much, much easier. And yet, there are days when I think how nice it would be to not need a tractor.

This is the third time in less than two months. Same tractor, same wheel. Not driver error either. This last time he was driving on the main farm road and the tire just blew. No one got hurt, thankfully. A replacement tire takes a week to arrive to our part of the country from the tractor dealer. A tractor is very convenient to have until it isn’t.

La dificultad con tractores

Nosotros resistimos a comprar un tractor por años. ¡Son caros, requerían mantenimiento, hay que saber conducirlos (no es como un auto!), y precisa un galpón para estacionar cuando no están en uso. Por muchos años, contratamos con un vecino por el trabajo que necesito el uso de un tractor. Pero no estaba fácil a coordinar un horario por el trabajo. Y el mantenimiento y repuestos dependió al tiempo de ellos. Entonces, compramos primero un tractor muy chico. Y después compramos un tractor chico, y después, un tractor más grande. Ahora tenemos tres – uno tractor chico, uno mediano, y uno que no funciona.

Sobre todo, el tractor nos permite hacer muchas más cosas o hacer cosas con menos trabajo. Pero hay algunos días pienso sería mucho más fácil si no necesitábamos tractores.

El tercer rueda pinchada en menos de dos meses. El tractor mismo, la rueda misma. No por falta del conductor. Esta última vez Ruben estaba por la calle principal y la rueda se rompía. Sin daño a gente, por gracias. Una rueda nueva lleva una semana de la empresa del tractor. Un tractor es muy útil hasta el momento que no es.
