The Guesthouse is done!

We finished! The floor is cleaned, the patio furniture has been sealed and waxed, little fixes made, staging pictures taken, and it’s been posted on AirBnB!

I haven’t tweaked the wording of the rental listing yet, but it is live, which is an achievement.

So what’s next? Outside landscaping. We have a fence to finish, which the guesthouse backs up to, some trees and bushes to plant, and, maybe, a couple planters for the patio. We’re planning on getting the last of the wood for the fence next week. The plants depend on what is available when at the nursery.

¡La casa de huéspedes está lista!

¡Terminamos! Se ha limpiado el piso, se han sellado y encerado los muebles del patio, se han hecho pequeños arreglos, se han tomado fotos de puesta en escena, ¡y se ha publicado en AirBnB!

Todavía no he modificado la redacción de la lista de alquileres, pero está en vivo, lo cual es un logro. ¿Y ahora qué?

Paisajismo exterior. Tenemos un alambrado para terminar, a la que se apoya la casa de huéspedes, algunos árboles y arbustos para plantar y, tal vez, un par de macetas para el patio. Estamos planeando conseguir lo último de madera para el alambrado la próxima semana. Las plantas dependen de lo que esté disponible cuando estén en el vivero.

With a great deal of luck and a some dedicated work, our guest house roof is once again back together again. Some careful cutting meant we were able to take the metal roof apart, salvaging the parts we could. The broken roof support and facing were removed and the column twisted back into place.

For some unknown reason we had a small piece of matching roofing laying around. Which was the luck part of the repair. The last time we went shopping for the roof it took us nearly three months to find matching material. We were able to hammer part of the damage out of one of the roof pieces. The other we replaced with our extra sheet. We bough new roof supports and used up the very last of the facing we had painted to replace the broken one. We were extremely fortunate it was so straightforward to fix!

How does it look? Almost like new?

Casi como nuevo

Con mucha suerte y un poco de trabajo dedicado, el techo de nuestra casa de huéspedes vuelve a estar armado. Un corte cuidadoso significó que pudimos desarmar el techo de chapa, recuperando las partes que pudimos. Se retiraron el soporte y el revestimiento del techo rotos y se volvió a torcer la columna en su lugar.

Por alguna razón desconocida, teníamos un pequeño trozo de techo a juego por ahí. Que fue la parte afortunada de la reparación. La última vez que fuimos a comprar el techo, tardamos casi tres meses en encontrar el material adecuado. Pudimos martillar parte de los daños de una de las piezas del techo. El otro lo reemplazamos con nuestra sábana extra. Compramos nuevos soportes de techo y usamos lo último del revestimiento que habíamos pintado para reemplazar el roto. ¡Fuimos extremadamente afortunados de que fuera tan sencillo de arreglar!

We were so close to being done with all the finishing touches. So close.

Now we’re no longer quite so close. The walkway roof had a eucalyptus tree land on the roof. Thankfully, the damage is to the exterior walkway and its roof only. No other structural or cosmetic damage. The inside of the guest house and main roof were entirely untouched. The benefits of having added the walkway late, so the roof beams were external to the house. Which means, while it’s going to be a bit time consuming and complicated to fix, it’s not a disaster. It could have been so much worse. Anyone else had to deal with tree damaged roofs ?

Estábamos tan cerca

Estábamos muy cerca de terminar con todos los toques finales. Tan cerca.

Ahora ya no estamos tan cerca. El techo de la pasarela tenía un eucalipto en el techo. Afortunadamente, los daños son solo en la pasarela exterior y su techo. Sin ningún otro daño estructural o cosmético. El interior de la casa de huéspedes y el techo principal estaban completamente intactos. Los beneficios de haber agregado la pasarela tarde, por lo que las vigas del techo eran externas a la casa. Lo que significa que, si bien va a llevar un poco de tiempo y será complicado de solucionar, no es un desastre. Podría haber sido mucho peor. ¿Alguien más tuvo que lidiar con techos dañados por árboles?

Guest house update

I keep thinking that one of these days I’ll get to make a post that says we’ve finished and it’s available to rent.

Today is not that post.

However, progress has been made. We now have a bathroom mirror (and, wow, what a difference that makes!), baskets and hangers in the closet, and an almost finished patio fence. Patio furniture is being scrubbed and waxed, the floor is being cleaned, and we have the fire-pit seats cut. The fence to keep the sheep and guests on their respective sides is in progress. We are close. So very close.

As we inch closer, now is when I ask for a bit of help from y’all. When you travel, what do you expect to find in a rental cottage? Are there things you automatically think will be there? Are there things that you always hope to find? It have been more than a decade since either my parents or I traveled and stayed anywhere. Please let us know your favorite (or least favorite) amenities when you travel.

La casa de huéspedes

Sigo pensando que uno de estos días podré hacer un post que diga que hemos terminado y que está disponible para alquilar.

Hoy no es ese post.

Sin embargo, se han logrado avances. Ahora tenemos un espejo de baño (y, vaya, ¡qué diferencia hace eso!), canastas y perchas en el armario, y una cerca de patio casi terminada. Se están fregando y encerando los muebles del patio, se está limpiando el piso y se han cortado los asientos de la fogata.El alambrado para mantener a las ovejas y a los invitados en sus respectivos lados está en progreso. Estamos cerca. Muy cerca.

A medida que nos acercamos, ahora es cuando les pido un poco de ayuda. Cuando viajas, ¿qué esperas encontrar en una casa de alquiler? ¿Hay cosas que automáticamente piensas que estarán ahí? ¿Hay cosas que siempre esperas encontrar? Ha pasado más de una década desde que mis padres o yo viajamos a un Hotel o casa de alquiler. Por favor, háganos saber sus servicios favoritos (o menos favoritos) cuando viaje.

Repairing the water tower

One of the first things we did after buying the farm is have a well drilled. Water is important. We’ve had water shortages over the years – either by drought or from well problems – and we try very hard not to have it happen again. Water is pumped out of our well into two tanks which are part of a water tower that sits in between my parent’s house and a galpon. Our clothes lines are built around it.

Way back when we first built the water tower in 2012 it looked like this:

A very, very tall tower. A water tank at the very top drained into a larger holding tank at the bottom on a cement platform. After living on farm for a bit we learned the tower was too tall. It would sway in storms. Which was very scary.

In 2015 we added a platform in the middle of the tower:

The tanks were re-plumbed so that the water went in to the middle tank and drained into the bottom tank, leaving the top tank empty. It helped the tower to not be quite so top heavy. It still swayed in stormy weather. Sometime after 2020 we cut off the top of the tower just above the cross-braces of the second tank. I somehow missed getting pictures of that. But here’s what it has looked like for the past several years:

The platform for the second tank has been slowly rotting away. We braced the floor support. We slid cement board under the upper tank to help reinforce the floor. We added a metal walkway in front of the tank in case we had to go up a level to check the tank. We have been babying the platform for years until we could get it changed out.

This year the project finally made it to the top of the list. My father built a new platform under the existing platform using square beams.

With the new platform in place, my father, Ruben, and Alejandro emptied the upper tank, disconnected all the water pipes, hoisted the tank up, removed the rotted platform, and set the tank on its new base. The tank plumbing then had to be re-installed. I was a bad blogger and missed taking pictures of the whole process. Sorry. But look, the now stable and functional tank on it’s new base:

We will eventually put a new roof on the tower. But right now we are celebrating the completion of a project that has been pending for a very, very long time.

La reparación de la torre de agua.

Una de las primeras cosas que hicimos después de la compra del padrón fue el pozo de agua. El agua es muy importante. Sobre los años, faltamos agua por sequía o dificultades con el pozo de agua. Hacemos mucho trabajo para asegurarnos de que no falta agua. Con el sistema nuestro, el agua está bombeada del pozo a un tanque que está puesto a una torre entre la casa de mis padres y un galpón. Los tendederos están alrededor de la torre de agua.

Cuando recién construimos la torre de agua en 2012, se parecía como esto:

Una torre muy alta. Un tanque en la parte superior drenado a un tanque puesto al piso con una base de hormigón. Después de un poco de tiempo en el campo, aprendimos que la torre era demasiado alta. Se balancea en las tormentas o con viento fuerte. Fue muy aterradora.

En 2015 agregamos una plataforma en el medio de la torre:

Los canos de los tanques fueron reinstalados y el agua entró en el tanque en el medio y después drenado al tanque en el piso, dejando el tanque superior vacío. Ayudo a eliminar peso al punto de la torre. Todavía, la torre balancea durante las tormentas o con viento fuerte. En 2020 cortamos el nivel más alto de la torre un poco sobre el tanque segundo. Me faltan fotos de ese trabajo. Pero, por los últimos años, la torre de agua estaba como esto:

La plataforma del tanque segundo se ha estado pudriendo poco a poco. Reforzamos la plataforma. Metemos la placa de cimenticia abajo del tanque. Agregamos un perfil de hierro para darnos un lugar a estar si tuvimos que chequear el tanque. Cuidamos muy bien la plataforma por años hasta tuvimos tiempo a cambiarlo.

Finalmente, este año el proyecto de la torre de agua subió al número uno en la lista. Mi padre construyó una plataforma nueva abajo de la plataforma vieja con vigas cuadradas.

Con la nueva plataforma puesta, mi padre, Ruben, y Alejandro vaciaron el tanque superior, desconectaron todos los canos, levantaron el tanque, sacaron la plataforma podrida, y bajaron el tanque a la plataforma nueva. Y conectaron de nuevo todos los canos. Y lo hice mal y no saqué ninguna foto. Lo siento. Pero, mira, el tanque superior es estable y funciona:

Eventualmente, queremos poner un techo a la torre sobre el tanque superior. ¡Pero por ahora celebramos que, después de muchos años, el trabajo de la torre es completo!

Building Progress

Despite the holidays, we are still making progress on our guest house. The table top arrived! No pictures because it’s top down on a work bench at the moment. But soon. Meanwhile, other things are happening.

We have a firepit! We build it out of the old stone fence supports we had to take out when we fixed fences this year. The stone fence posts are absolutely fabulous and last forever. But one person can’t move them which makes them impractical nowadays as there isn’t a team fixing fence.

And we have the upper shelves in for the kitchen and I am slowly finding kitchen stuff what we have and making not of what we’ll need to buy.

Progreso de la construcción

A pesar de los feriados, avanzamos con la casa de huéspedes. ¡El granito de la mesa llegó! Sin fotos porque está puesto de arriba hacia abajo en el banco de trabajo. Mientras tanto, otras cosas están ocurriendo.

¡Tenemos una hoguera! Construimos con los postes de piedra vieja del alambrado. Tuvimos sacar los postes de piedra cuando reparamos los alambrados porque los postes de piedra son demasiado pesados para manejar una persona. Son maravillosos y duran años. Pero sin una cuadrilla para alambrar no son muy prácticos.

En la cocina tenemos los estantes superiores. Y, poco a poco, estoy juntando cosas para armar la cocina y notando lo que voy a necesitar comprar.

The past several weeks have proved that while the weather is behind schedule – still cool, often with record lows at night – all the spring things are happening eventually. Like the arrival of my seasonal allergies. So I have no energy and am hiding inside from nature. Thankfully, my father has no seasonal allergies and has continued to make wonderful progress. Please admire the new guest house closet!

By now it has a hanging bar even. Usually I am the painter but this time my father did it all. Up next, the upper shelves for the kitchen.

¡Un ropero!

Estas últimas semanas nos mostró que no sea importante que toda la primavera esté atrasada – está bien fresco y por la noche muy baja es la temperatura – todas las cosas de la primavera va a llegar en su tiempo. Como mis alergias. No tengo energía y trato de escapar la naturaleza escondiéndome en casa. Por gracias, mi padre no sufre las alergias y sigue a avanzar la casita. ¡Mira, un ropero!

Y ahora tiene una barra colocada. Normalmente, pinto yo todo, pero esta vez hizo todo mi padre. ¡Y mira, ya empezó los estantes superiores de la concina!

Catching up & progress

It’s been a hectic two weeks here on the farm and, sadly, notes to y’all have suffered for it. My father & I both thought we were over our colds (we weren’t), that things would settle out a bit (they didn’t), and that spring had arrived (it hadn’t). A whole new course of both over-the-counter medicines and a few not-so-over-the-counter medicines later, all health is trending in a better direction.

We’ve had some unexpected issues here on farm. Which, really, is the expected, because, well, farming. The well pump died. Because we’ve had this problem before, we had a backup. But it still required a fair bit of work and we couldn’t delay. No running water is a serious problem. We have the non-working well pump out to see if it can be repaired. If not, decisions will need to be made.

The clothes dryer died. Which, normally by this time of year, I wouldn’t use because it should be warm enough it’s not needed. But as noted above, spring is late. Three weeks of too wet to dry the clothes, too windy to be able to hang the clothes, and our typical excessive amount of laundry meant we had to coordinate dryer trouble shooting and replacement. I am inordinately excited by the new dyer. It’s a truly wonderful thing.

Then we had cell phone chips die. I didn’t know cell phone chips could die. They can. Evidently they get old and quit. Our farm phone is router based, as is our internet, and, of course, our cell phones. So some chips got replaced at an Antel branch and one got to have an on-farm service call. Three lines now work again.

Then we had massive storm fronts roll in. We’ve had record high temperatures, record low temperatures, and any number of high wind warnings. We even had a cyclone warning one day. Fall decided to go out with drama. Now we have warming temperatures, blue sky, and sunshine. Needless to say, no pretty garden pictures yet.

So what concrete, visible progress do I have to share? I offer you newly installed kitchen cabinets in the guest house!

The stove has since been connected and I am giddy to report that the kitchen sink works, with hot water! Next up, closet shelves to be installed. The table top has been ordered. We are getting close.

Ponerse al día y progresar

Paso dos semanas muy caótico acá en el campo y, lamentablemente, las noticias a ustedes sufrió. Mi padre y yo pensamos que nos quitó la gripe (no, no quitó), la vida va a quedar más tranquilo (no, no calmo), y que la primavera había llegado (no, todavía no llegó). Después de más medicamentos, estamos recuperando, finalmente.

Como es un campo, cuando quiebra una cosa, quiebra algunas cosas. La bomba de agua quita a funcionar. No es la primera vez, y tuvimos una bomba segunda. Pero, repuesto en mano o no, es un trabajo urgente y complicado. Es difícil a vivir sin agua limpia. Mandamos la bomba vieja a una casa de repuestos para ver si podemos reparar. Si no, necesitaremos pensar bien porque bombas son caras.

El secador de ropa murió. Normalmente, en esta época, no me importa porque hace calor y no preciso. Pero, como está notado antes, este año la primavera estaba tardes. Tres semanas de lluvia, rosillos, viento demasiado fuerte, y una cantidad de ropa tremenda, fue necesario a hacer algo. Entonces, tenemos un secador nuevo. Es básico, pero es un maravillo. ¡Seca la ropa!

¿Sabe que los chips en los teléfonos o modems pueden ser quemados de edad? Yo no sabía que cuando son viejos puedan quitar a dar servicio. El teléfono del campo, nuestra data, y los celulares, todos son de chip y torre celular. Entonces, viajes a las sucursales de Antel, una visita técnica al campo, y ahora todo funciona de nuevo.

Entre todo, la primavera no llego. En lugar de la primavera tuvimos tormentas de viento, temperaturas muy bajos, temperaturas muy altas, y mucha lluvia. ¡Un día había una noticia por un ciclón! El otoño decidió que quería salir con drama. Solamente hoy tenemos temperaturas normales, un cielo azul, y sol. No hace falta decir que fotos de una quinta plantada no tengo. Puede ser en algunos días.

¿Entonces, fotos puedo ofrecerles? ¡Fotos de las mesadas instaladas en la casa de huéspedes!

¡La cocina está instalada (y con gas!), el agua funciona, y con agua caliente! El próximo será el ropero en el baño. Pedimos el granito por la mesa. Casi está terminado.

Building progress

Last week we made lots of progress on the casita! Soon I hope to tell y’all that we finished. Soon.

I painted the outside walkway wall, we had gravel delivered to make the outside patio and stairs, the baseboards were installed, and we got the granite countertops for the kitchen!! The countertops aren’t construction, they are furniture since the countertops won’t be actually attached to the walls. Doesn’t matter, we still need a kitchen. Isn’t it starting to look nearly finished?

¡La semana pasada avanzamos mucho la construcción de la casita! Espero, en poco tiempo, a contarles que terminamos. Espero.

¡Yo pinté la pared exterior de la pasada, recibimos una entrega de tosca por el patio y las escaleras exteriores, instalamos los zócalos, y llegaron las mesadas por la concina! Las mesadas, en teoría, no cuenta como construcción porque no van a estar atados a la pared. Pero no importa porque necesitamos una cocina igual. Se parece casi terminado, ¿no?

Continuing the update routine, I present a finished kitchen wall in the guest house! We are ridiculously pleased with the outcome.

We did get those last few trim pieces on the right installed. I just didn’t go back and take another picture. A stove has been purchased, but won’t be unboxed until install. We also got the fascia boards up! Such a small thing to make such a big change to the look of the house:

With luck, by the end of this coming week we’ll have the rain gutters all installed and I’ll have painted the last of the baseboards. As always, progress depends on the weather. In construction OR farming.

Progreso de la construcción

¡Seguimos con el tema de noticias de novedades, te presento la terminación de la pared en la cocina! Estamos muy orgullosos de esta pared. Es muy linda.

Sí, instalamos las últimas piezas allí a la derecha. Solamente que no me fui a sacar una foto nueva. Ya compramos una cocina, pero está en una caja todavía. Y va a quedar en la caja hasta la instalación. ¡También están terminados las tablas de fascia! Es una cosa muy pequeña, pero se parece un gran cambio en la casita:

Con suerte, antes del fin de la semana terminamos la instalación de los desagües y voy a tener pintado los zócalos. Como siempre, con la agricultura o la construcción, todo depende al clima.
