I’d love to say there’s some great and wonderful update to the garden, but really, it’s been a bit of a wash this year. As you know, we got a late start to the season and while some things have done well, others have struggled. We’re already having colder weather so I don’t expect as long of a growing season as years past.

So, the tomatoes. They’ve done surprisingly well given the late planting, strong winds, and unexpected amounts of water last month. Granted, I think they might be doing well because I planted so many plants and only person eats them. So we can’t be short tomatoes, which is how I judge success.

The zucchini grew lavishly until the summer heat burned them. Then we had a lot of rain and they rallied some. Now they are getting burned by the chill nights. Not quite sure ho much longer they will last. I did plant a second round. As you can see from the pictures, the success is mixed. Some are happy and some….well…not quite sure why they aren’t growing.

The winter squash look the same as always. Do your winter squash always look a bit bedraggled? Ours look beautiful until they start to set fruit, then they are ragged and browning and look like that for months. Every year I think they’re going to die back early and every year they hold on and keep adding fruit until nearly June. I even planted a second set and it looks like I may get fruit from those.

The cucumber plants that decided to germinate are happy as can be. Didn’t manage to get them to grow upwards (I missed that chance) but they are producing lots of fruit. I put up over a dozen liters of bread and butter pickles and in a few weeks will make pickle relish. Not bad for only six plants or so.

The melon plants – which I had to seed twice due to ants eating the first set – and growing but I don’t expect fruit. They like it hot and all indications are for an early cold fall. But I’ll leave them be until the first frost.

It’s early yet for planting the winter garden, but if the weather changes early I might start with fava beans and peas and see what happens. How are your gardens going?

Actualización de la quinta

Me encantaría decir que hay una gran y maravillosa actualización en el la quinta, pero en realidad, ha sido un poco complicado este año. Como sabes, tuvimos un comienzo tardío de la temporada y, aunque algunas cosas han funcionado bien, otras han tenido problemas. Ya estamos teniendo un clima más frío, así que no espero una temporada de cultivo tan larga como en años anteriores.

Entonces, los tomates. Les ha ido sorprendentemente bien dada la siembra tardía, los fuertes vientos y las cantidades inesperadas de agua el mes pasado. Por supuesto, creo que podrían estar haciéndolo bien porque planté muchas plantas y solo las come una persona. Así que no podemos quedarnos cortos de tomates, que es como juzgo el éxito.

Los zucchini crecían espléndidamente hasta que el calor del verano los quemaba. Luego llovió mucho y ellos se recuperaron un poco. Ahora se están quemando por las noches frías. No estoy muy segura de que duren mucho más. Planté una segunda ronda. Como se puede ver en las imágenes, el éxito es mixto. Algunos son felices y otros… pozo… No estoy muy segura de por qué no están creciendo.

Las calabazas tienen el mismo aspecto de siempre. ¿Tu calabaza de invierno siempre se ve un poco desaliñada? Los nuestros se ven hermosos hasta que comienzan a dar frutos, luego están irregulares y dorados y se ven así durante meses. Cada año pienso que van a morir antes de tiempo y cada año aguantan y siguen añadiendo fruta hasta casi junio. Incluso planté un segundo conjunto y parece que puedo obtener frutos de ellos.

Las plantas de pepino que decidieron germinar están tan felices como puede ser. No conseguí que crecieran hacia arriba (perdí esa oportunidad) pero están produciendo muchos frutos. Puse más de una docena de litros de pepinillos de pan y mantequilla y en unas pocas semanas haré que la salsa criolla. No está mal para solo seis plantas más o menos.

Las plantas de melón, que tuve que sembrar dos veces debido a que las hormigas se comieron el primer conjunto, y crecen, pero no espero frutos. Les gusta el calor y todo indica que el frío es temprano. Pero los dejaré hasta la primera helada.

Todavía es temprano para plantar el jardín de invierno, pero si el clima cambia temprano, podría comenzar con habas y guisantes y ver qué sucede. ¿Cómo van tus quintas?
