The farm garden is definitely a work in progress. A tasty, dirty, beautiful, frustrating, work in progress. We have planted over 80 fruit trees: apple, pear, plum, apricot, and almond. We have found, through some trial and error, that peach and nectarine trees do not do well in our soil. Fruit trees won’t begin to bear fruit for several years, but the promise is there.
Permanent asparagus beds are adjacent to each of the three greenhouses. Asparagus crowns were started from seed in 2013, more in 2015. With three years growth necessary prior to harvest, asparagus harvests will slowly grow over time as the beds become fully planted.
The main garden is composed of eight beds, measured 30m x 15 m, and are arranged around the chicken coop. Long-term plans for the garden are for us to grow nearly all of our own produce, as well as provide the necessary forage and supplemental food for our chickens, rabbits, and pigs.
