I think I’ve mentioned before, we were very focused on having anything we planted be productive. Which, for trees, meant they had to produce something. They also had to be wind resistant because we rarely have a wind-free day. So we planted strawberry guava, pineapple guava, Surinam cherries, and a relative of the myrtle whose name I cannot remember. We knew very little about any of them; we were informed they grew edible fruit, grew quickly in our climate, and didn’t mind the wind.

Ten years later I can say it’s true they don’t mind the wind. However, they don’t grow that quickly. And edible is up for debate. The myrtle berry relative is so astringent only the birds like it. The Surinam Cherry requires a bit of knowledge to process. Then come the guavas.

They do grow well. They produce a lot of fruit. They are edible, if a bit of an acquired taste when fresh. But what do you do with them? Other than eat them fresh or make jam. Anyone have any experience? The strawberry guava is starting to ripen, the yellow variety (lemon? I think?) will be ripening soon, and then comes the pineapple guava. Everyone I’ve talked to just eats them fresh, which we haven’t enjoyed. Jam isn’t for us either. Even the dog is skeptical.

Now, when it comes time for the pineapple guava I have a recipe for chutney that might be just the thing. I’ll tell you more about that when their season starts. But so far, no idea for the strawberry guava. I did harvest some and put them in the freezer in case anyone has some great suggestions.

We have a very long windbreak on the north side of the garden which is planted with a mixture of guava and myrtle varieties. If I paid attention to the maturing fruit we could harvest a fairly large amount of fruit. Last year I cleaned up the fallen fruit and fed it to the chickens. The year before I think I fed some to the pigs. While I don’t regret planting the windbreak with food bearing trees, I have come to accept that if you want a windbreak, plant a great windbreak tree. If you want a good fruit tree, plant a fruit tree. But don’t plant a fruit tree that could be a wind break tree just because it doesn’t mind the wind. Especially not if you don’t know if you like the fruit.

<div
