I can’t believe I’m going to type this, but we burned <\/em>several fields. And by we, I mean Ruben. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having spent most of my life living in the western United States, fire is not something I am casual about. And the very idea of deliberately setting fields on fire makes me just about have a panic attack. Now, rationally, I can tell you that burning fields to eliminate invasive weeds is much better than spraying herbicide. No chemicals, to tilling the ground, the ash adds nutrients. There’s many benefits. But it’s still fire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first year we’ve actually been prepared to seed our fields for fall. Every other year we’ve missed the window. Part of it is that we aren’t looking at a normal olive harvest so we have the time. Part of it is that we’ve finally managed to have the right things finished in the right season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruben was very pleased when we agreed he could burn the fields. Despite what he considers our excessive caution and overall irrational panic, it went beautifully. He picked a day with almost no wind, clear skies, after heavy rains so the trees, if something happened, wouldn’t be affected. Don’t ask me how, but he only burned that which he intended to. It even burned only to the fenceline!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I type this, Ruben is finishing up spreading the winter seed and fertilizer for the pasture. With luck, in a few weeks I’ll be sharing pictures of greening pastures! Anyone else burn their fields or gardens for weed management? Is this common anywhere else or just here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quemando los portreros<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No puedo creer que vaya a escribir esto, pero quemamos<\/em> varios potreros. Y por nosotros, me refiero a Rub\u00e9n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despu\u00e9s de haber pasado la mayor parte de mi vida viviendo en el oeste de los Estados Unidos, el fuego no es algo que me haga casual. Y la sola idea de prender fuego deliberadamente a los potreros me hace tener un ataque de p\u00e1nico. Ahora, racionalmente, puedo decirles que quemar potreros para eliminar malezas invasoras es mucho mejor que quemar con herbicida. Sin productos qu\u00edmicos, para labrar la tierra, la ceniza agrega nutrientes. Hay muchos beneficios. Pero sigue siendo fuego. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Este es el primer a\u00f1o que realmente nos hemos preparado para sembrar nuestros potreros para el oto\u00f1o. Cada dos a\u00f1os hemos perdido la ventana. Parte de ello es que no estamos viendo una cosecha de aceitunas normal, as\u00ed que tenemos tiempo. Parte de ello es que finalmente hemos logrado tener las cosas correctas terminadas en la temporada correcta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rub\u00e9n se alegr\u00f3 mucho cuando acordamos que pod\u00eda quemar los potreros. A pesar de lo que \u00e9l considera nuestra excesiva cautela y el p\u00e1nico irracional general, todo sali\u00f3 muy bien. Eligi\u00f3 un d\u00eda casi sin viento, cielos despejados, despu\u00e9s de fuertes lluvias para que los \u00e1rboles, si algo suced\u00eda, no se vieran afectados. No me preguntes c\u00f3mo, pero solo quem\u00f3 lo que pretend\u00eda. \u00a1Incluso se quem\u00f3 solo hasta la l\u00ednea de la cerca!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
