I try not to cover some of the more touchy topics here on the blog. Not because I think y’all are here only for the happy parts of farming but because I know not everyone is comfortable talking about raising animals for the dinner table. That said, we do raise almost all of our meat and it is an integral part of our life here on the farm, so here goes.

In January we bought another group of Cornish Cross chicks. Now, normally we wouldn’t start a second batch of meat birds until March due the the heat. This years’ weather, as I keep saying, has been on the cold side and chicks like warm weather their first few weeks, so we decided to try them early.

Now, why didn’t I tell you about them in January? Because we the first night they were here on farm we lost 10 of them. From 45 to 35 overnight. I had taken a picture but not yet shared. We found where a feral cat got in, we fixed the chick enclosure and took a deep breath. Now, 35 chicks are still new chicks and no reason not to talk about them. I wrote a draft blog post. Day 2 found us missing 3 more chicks. The blog post to share with y’all stayed a draft. Over the next two weeks we lost all but 11 chicks. All from animal predation.

Now, the commercial layer chicks and meat chicks from October had zero losses from animal predation. No cats, no possums, no weasels, no snakes, no skunks, no lizards. All of which we’ve had problems with before and we’ve got so much mesh and wire up in the chick space you’d think we’d have it locked down. Evidently not. Every time I thought about sharing with y’all the new meat birds we’d lose more. Not exactly a positive topic. I thought it would be overly morbid to count down the losses every day.

We finally gave up and built a cage in the cage where we chased the chicks in every night and managed to outsmart what turned out to be juvenile possums who were small enough to fit through holes the weasels couldn’t.

the chicks’ nightly jail

So, around the second week of February we stabilized at 11 meat birds. I waited a week and tentatively drafted a new blog post. The the heat spiked up and we lost 5 to heat stroke, despite the fans and shade covers. Which is why in prior years we haven’t bought chicks until March. The extreme heat only lasted three days and has since dropped, leaving us with 6 chicks. The remaining six have been doing well, the heat has settled into warmer than I’d like but not a danger zone. We have about three weeks until they should be at harvest weight. I hope they make it.

Nuevos pollos de doble pechuga.
