All of us. My mother, thankfully, got the lightest case. Alejandro managed to get it twice, but lightly. Ruben caught it and has a lingering cough and chest congestion. I was doing all right with a fairly mild case until it turned into a sinus infection. I am now on antibiotics and more. My father has it and he’s like a zombie at the moment. He even went to the doctor’s. We are all recovering, but we’ve lost more than a week of anything not actually essential. So all the animals are fine, the basics of the farm kept running. But I’m sorry y’all, I just didn’t have the mental capacity to write a blog post. I can’t even tell you what we did last week. We worked, but it’s all a bit of a blur.

So, instead, let me share with you the chicks. Week 6 didn’t see many changes, but Week 7 saw an upgrade in accommodations for both groups.

The black chicks have all their feathers so they moved to the big grow out space which has outside access, roosts, and, eventually, pasture access! It took them a couple of days, but they are starting to get the hang of the new digs. They’ll be there until they start laying proper eggs, so about five months.

The white chicks don’t look like chicks anymore. They are actually at harvest weight and will be heading to the freezer on Wednesday if we can all manage to stay healthy enough to process them. But until then, they too got an upgrade:

Fans. Spring here has some very hot days with very cold nights. The cold nights are fine – but the high daytime temps stress out the meat birds to the point of heat stroke. So they get fans. They sit right there in front of them and are very happy, thank you very much. If anyone had told me, years ago, that I would have fans to keep my dinner alive I’d have fallen off my chair laughing. Yet here we are.

With some luck, and help from modern medicine, the blog will return to its mostly regular posts. I hope that y’all are surviving the seasonal illnesses that come with the changing temperatures with more success than we are.
