Calling it the 2023 Pecan Harvest makes it sound so large and grandiose. Which it’s not. We do, however, harvest pecans from our own trees. We planted our first pecan trees in August of 2014<\/a>, nearly 9 years ago. And then replanted them the year after when most of them died. And more again last year because we really liked the first set. All told we have around 150 pecan trees on farm. But only about 50 old enough to actually produce nuts. Pecans take about 15 years to really grow into production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four years ago we got enough pecans to almost fill a black bucket (the ubiquitous black construction bucket we use for nearly everything from egg collecting to making cement – they’re about 8 in. tall and 13 in. wide) . The year after, two buckets. Last year about five buckets. This year we have harvested 7 black buckets so far and we aren’t done yet. Five black buckets fit on the floor under a shelf in the kitchen. This year we have enough we need to actually store them somewhere other than the kitchen. It’s a very happy problem to have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our storage pantry shares space with the laundry and isn’t critter proof so I decided hanging from the rafters would be the safest, and easiest, storage solution. I used scrap burlap left over from making shearing bags to make pecan bags. Once full, I stitched them shut and used an awl to make a hole for a carabiner through the top for hanging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a tall ladder and my father’s help we hung the bags from the roof supports over the pantry space. While not easy access for us, it’s off the floor, has good airflow, and is equally hard access for vermin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will harvest pecans as they fall until the middle of July. I was optimistic and sewed 10 pecan bags. Let’s hope we fill them all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con un t\u00edtulo como Cosecha de Pecanes 2023 se parece una cosa grandiosa. No es cos\u00ed. Pero cosechamos pecanes de nuestros \u00e1rboles propios. Plantamos pecanes en agosto de 2014<\/a>, hace casi 9 a\u00f1os. Y plantamos de nuevo el a\u00f1o pr\u00f3ximo, cuando casi todos murieran. Y m\u00e1s todav\u00eda el a\u00f1o pasado porque nos gustan tanto los primeros \u00e1rboles. En total tenemos alrededor de 150 \u00e1rboles de pec\u00e1n en el campo. Solamente 50 son de edad para producir nueces. En general, pecanes necesitan 15 a\u00f1os para ser en producci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hace cuatro a\u00f1os cosechamos pecanes suficientes a llenar un balde negro (los baldes negros, tan comunes ac\u00e1 en Uruguay, son 20\u202fcm alto y 33\u202fcm de ancho). El a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s, dos baldes. El a\u00f1o pasado, casi cinco baldes. Este a\u00f1o cosechamos siete baldes y no terminamos. Cinco baldes negros pueden quedar abajo de un estante en la cocina. Este a\u00f1o tenemos suficiente de nueces que necesitamos guardar en otro lugar. Es una complicaci\u00f3n muy feliz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuestro almac\u00e9n chico est\u00e1 combinado con la lavander\u00eda y no est\u00e1 segura contra los bichos. Entonces, decid\u00ed que ser\u00eda mejor si las nueces est\u00e1n guardados colgando del cielo del galp\u00f3n. Cose bolsas de arpillera que me quedo de la costura de bolsas por la esquila. Despu\u00e9s que est\u00e1n llenos, cose cerrado e hice un agujero para pasar un gancho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con una escalera y la ayuda de mi padre, colgamos las bolsas de los apoyos del techo sobre el almac\u00e9n. Mientras que no es muy accesible para nosotros, no est\u00e1n por el piso, tiene muy bien corriente de aire, y tambi\u00e9n no es muy accesible por los bichos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
